How to Track Coach CPR Certifications and 2-Year Renewals
Starting in 2027, California youth sports coaches need CPR and AED certification, renewed at least every two years. Getting coaches trained is step one. Keeping track of who's current, season after season, is the part that lasts.
What to record for each coach
Name and team; date certified; expiration date; provider; a saved copy of the certificate.
Use the date on the certificate
Record the certification date printed on the certificate, not the date a coach sent it to you. That’s the date the two-year clock runs from.
Option 1: A spreadsheet
It works for small leagues. Create one row per coach, sort by expiration date, and check it before every season. The downside: you chase screenshots and update it by hand.
Option 2: An admin portal
If your league buys seats through A-B-CPR, we set up a portal that shows enrollment, status and completion certificates in one place. New coaches show up as they enroll, and you can download certificates when you need them.
Plan renewals now
Put each renewal date on your league calendar, and send reminders 60 days before a coach’s certification expires. Because A-B-CPR seats don’t expire, you can keep a few prepaid seats on hand for renewals and new coaches.
Checking a certificate
Registrars can look up an A-B-CPR certificate at /verify-certificate/.

Frequently asked questions
How often do coaches need to renew?
At least every two years under California law.
What if a certificate has no expiration date?
Ask the coach or provider for one that shows it. A-B-CPR certificates show both the issue and expiration dates.
Do we need to keep certificates?
Keeping a copy for each coach makes it easy to show who's certified.
